Why gratitude?
While attending an MIT program, Barrett met one of the most powerful and inspiring individuals he knows. This individual’s name is Brother David Stenidl-Rast and his passion is spreading the joy of gratitude. Brother David was a quarter Jewish and spent his adolescent years living in Australia under German Nazi reign. He was forced to join the Nazi army as a medical personnel. Over those dark, despairing years Brother David found something to be grateful for each day. He attributes his gratefulness to helping him endure those years. It was gratitude that led him to become a catholic monk and later study gratefulness with leaders of the great religions. Brother David believes that gratefulness is woven in all the great religions and is a necessary part of spiritual development.
Brother David taught Barrett an important lesson. Brother David taught him to find gratitude even when faced with great adversity. By being grateful for adversity, Barrett removes anxiety and limited thinking, allowing him to look for opportunities and potential.
At one point in Barrett’s life, this value was heavily tested. After stock piling $500,000 worth of chemical fertilizer in a warehouse (to avoid increasing fertilizer prices), a fire burnt the warehouse and fertilizer to the ground. Barrett didn’t have insurance on the fertilizer and would have been forced to purchase it at increased costs. Instead, Barrett decided that the fire was a gift. That moment led Barrett to the biggest business opportunity of his life: Holganix.
At the end of the day, business is difficult. We can’t control what happens to us, we can only control how we respond. If we respond with gratitude, we will find potential and possibilities within adversity. For Barrett, adversity is a leading indicator of success. The bigger the adversity life throws his way, the bigger the success.
